This project is about tree roots growing down the sides of this massive marble block at a quarry in Rutland, Vermont.
I built a soil filled, wooden "planter", around, over and down the sides of the stone to the ground. Then I planted a single Elm tree up on top of the marble block in this soil filled container. With the "planter" over and around the stone, the roots grow down the sides and into the ground at the base.
The roots will wrap the marble block. As the "planter" crumbles away with age, the tree will be left up on the rock hanging on with its roots in the ground!
