Living Sculpture: Forsooth

Forsooth
Putney, Vermont.

This is two Sycamore trees grafted around a pink marble block with FORSOOTH carved into it. Most people ask what FORSOOTH means. I tell them it is an old English word used to express surprise - not the name of a person buried there, though the slab of marble does resemble a headstone.

I planted two Sycamore trees close to each other and began wrapping the upper branches together over the course of a couple of years. Doing this is the best, fastest and easiest way to graft Sycamore together. They sort of weld together over a few years. It's very convenient. The two trees are now one tree. Then I cut a form in cardboard approximating the inside opening. I used this form to cut the shape of the marble slab insert. It fit in perfectly and now is grown around on all sides and held, soon to be swallowed !

Living Sculpture: Forsooth From the Beginning

There is nothing more for me to do with this project. Eventually, if nature follows a normal course here, the tree will completely absorb the included rock and it may disappear inside the tree. I could perhaps cut the tree down and save the artifact as it is now...
