Root Moulding:

I grow the roots of a tree in a mould, I use a variety of trees, moulds, and media. In a sense, the tree is bonsai in that it becomes stunted and completely root-bound (within the mould in this case), as in pot bound.

The results are many. One is the removal of the mould, which reveals a dried root mass, which has conformed to the interior of the mould. It becomes a dried artifact.

Another option with suitable shapes, such as the staircase, is to have the project remain living. Cutting away the bottom of the mould allows the roots to grow into the ground. Eventually the rest of the mould can be removed.

By injecting a radioisotope into the tree, which is in the mould and then photographing it, large images can be made.

Inclusions:

Inclusions in trees are projects where I have placed metal, glass, cups, fans, rocks, etc. into a living tree. Electric conduit and water piping can be introduced into a tree as well. These options allow for lighting and water fountains. The tree heals over the foreign object and incorporates it.
