An Invitation
I hope to share the possibilities of grafted Tree Sculpture with Landscape Designers and also the hope that botanical architecture be considered as a new medium in the future of Landscape Design. Strategically and sensitively placed grafted tree sculptures present elements of form and structure unusual in the natural world and offer areas in the environment that are strikingly distinct.
For example, grafted tree structures provide distinct areas of interest, intrigue and focal points in the environment. Trees planted symmetrically on steep hillsides in threes and grafted together as tripods bestow a pattern of creativity on the chore of erosion control. A copse of trees in an open area grafted together at an angle may hold and then lead the eye another direction. Within appropriate circumstances trees may even include signage, drinking fountains and anodized aluminum clouds!
Not least among considerations when choosing to include grafted botanical architecture is the implicit expression of a special relationship with Nature. Trees "worked" in this way demonstrate a collaborative interaction over time and can be understood as an "intimate" and long-term testament to a unique relationship with the natural world. The precedent I can relate to this is that of Japanese gardeners and their generations long involvement with certain landscape gardens.
I work closely with landscape designers to include grafted tree structures in their plans. I consult in the design, sighting, choice of tree material, and fully participate in the installation of the project. I will be available for the duration of the project to offer advice, enhancements and future direction. Seasonal interventions may include branch training and grafting, pruning and training of a tree to an armature structure. I am committed to a long term, hands on involvement in the enterprise myself or I can offer complete staff training in the grafting, shaping and the future needs of the project.
The initial consultation is always free! However Living Sculpture projects, by their very nature, require a significant amount of thought and planning. Fees will be discussed when it is decided to proceed to drawings, plans, and fulfilling a project. As ideas become plans and concepts evolve, we will work together to create landscaping projects that are unique and extraordinary and which also demonstrate a new and evolved relationship with the natural world.
