Living Grafted Tree Sculpture Classes

I am currently offering workshops, seminars and classes in tree sculpture grafting to botanical gardens, arboretums, children and family gardens as well as other interested groups nationally. Workshops are prepared for all age groups and levels of horticultural understanding.

Classes generally gather informally outside and discuss aspects of choosing the appropriate tree species to fit the particular design goals. Also considered is the timetable and what this means in nature. Environmental concerns including climate, site and soil are also discussed as well as basics of tree Botany and how grafting and pleaching occur.

The project is considered an addition to an institution's on site exhibition inventory and offers hands on involvement both in the planting as well as during the demonstration of grafting methods and manipulation techniques.

Rounding out the completion of the project in this early stage the participants are invited to consider the future growth of the project, to anticipate this and to think about the tree's growth response to the initial training. Read more below ...

Design drawing of Arches Suitable venues are Botanical Gardens, Arboretums, Children and family gardens, Museums, Schools, Universities/ Colleges, and Municipal and Private Parks.

Public workshops in a Family Garden or a Childrenšs Garden or a specified area of a Botanical park draw great interest. A Tree Sculpture installation is a place to visit and re-visit over time. Participation in such a class invests the public for the long term in the project and in the venue.

A turnkey transition of care is suggested for follow-up maintenance to the project. With this in mind I do staff training to introduce the design goals of the sculpture planting. I familiarize staff with the anticipated stages of the project and suggest the annual pruning, water, and supplement needs. I provide instruction in any particular grafting or training technique as well.

For further staff education I extend a seminar presentation to provide an introduction to the inspiration and potential of tree sculpture. I include precedents in history, very many examples, and I share techniques. Also useful is a brief introduction to some of the related issues in working with nature this way.

Fees, costs, contracts and budgets are discussed at the time of the initial interview.

Seminars, slide lectures, demonstrations, available.

Tree sculptures

Commissions for tree projects are accepted based on locale, time frame, and the negotiation of maintenance issues. Fees, costs, budgets and contracts are negotiated at the initial interview. Park equipment including Jungle gyms, seating, fencing, arch entrance-ways, path lighting with electric wire in the tree, water fountains with piping in the tree are all possible. See further examples of project possibilities on the Gallery page.

Consultation on a fee basis is provided for design applications and installation of tree sculpture at public, private and institutional sites. Consultation is offered on grafting and pleaching techniques as well as pruning steps and soil amendments. Advice is available for a tree sculpture on suitable designs and the selection of trees. Design suggestions are available for large commercial applications such as: fencing, architectural structures, eye catchers and logos.

Seminars, slide lectures, demonstrations, are also provided.
